Lake Braddock Freshman Football Players and Parents,

Welcome to the Lake Braddock Bruins football program, I would like to take a few minutes to explain what you can expect for the first few weeks of practice.

Equipment hand out August 5, 2010, 4:00pm-6:00pm,in the football locker room. If you cannot  attend that day, you will have to pick your equipment up after the first day of practice (August 10th). Remember that the Emergency Care form and physical forms must be completed to be able to practice. All players will be assigned a locker in the freshmen football locker room. Players must also provide a combination lock for their football locker.

First practice August 10, 2010 5:00pm-7:00pm, All player should meet in the Freshmen Football locker room at 4:30pm.

Practice Schedule

We will practice five or six days each week, until school starts. Weekday practices will start at 5:00 pm and go NLT 7:30. Saturday practices, when held,  time TBA. Practice will start promptly, please make sure your player is there early enough to dress and get to the field on time. The school will provide all equipment except for socks, athletic supporter/cup, black gym shorts, football cleats (black or white)and a mouthpiece(no clear or white mouthpieces allowed). Once school starts, all freshmen players will have a mandatory "study hall" most every day before practice (2:30-3:15). During this time, all players must be in study hall or with one of their teachers. This time should be used for the player to start any homework they may have.  Sample practice schedule once school starts,  Monday-Wednesday 3:30-5:30, NLT 6:00pm. Thursday, game 6:00pm, players need to be at school NLT 3:30pm. Friday, 2:30-3:00 game film review. Saturday, morning practice, time TBA

Week 1  Evaluation Week.  This week will be when the coaching staff assesses the  physical capability and experience of each player to determine where they can best help the team to be successful. This may be a tough week for them and you can expect some aches and pains. Please make sure they get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids. They also should take it easy during the day, as practices will be strenuous. This will consist of conditioning as well as skill drills, both contact and non contact. Dress for this week will be black shorts, practice jersey, cleats and helmet for the first 3 days and we will add shoulder pads the last 2 days.

Week 2  Hitting Week.  These will be regular practices in full uniform and we will do a lot of full contact drills. Players who have missed one or more practices will continue to work out in helmets and shoulder pads until they complete their 5th practice ( players must have 3 practices with helmets only and 2 with shoulder pads and helmet, before they can go to full uniform). The players will get some bumps and bruises this week, as should be expected. We will have Certified Athletic Trainers at all practices and players can see them at anytime for any injuries.  We will continue to evaluate the players for their ability and begin to determine which positions they can best help the team. The following weeks will become routine with each practice having some fundamental work, individual skill work and team 7v7, 11 v 11 offense v defense.

Practices are Mandatory  Missing practice hurts the team and makes it difficult for players to learn. We will practice in bad weather, including rain, but will not practice when there is visible lighting, we will practice in the gym in this event. The players should keep some tennis shoes in their lockers, so they will be prepared to practice in the gym. We usually practice for two or two and half hours and will do our best to finish on time.  As always, there are exceptions, for missing a practice,  we can discuss those on a case-by-case basis.

No cut policy.  Lake Braddock football program has a no cut policy (except for disciplinary or academic issues) The benefit of this is that every player has an opportunity to find out if football is right for them.  However, this can lead to a larger roster, which means there is a possibility that some players may not get into the games. There is no guarantee of playing time to anyone, all playing time will be earned and decided on the field.

Academics  will be taken very seriously, we will base our academic requirements on the midterm reports of the First quarter. Each player needs to have a passing grade in at least five courses at midterm. A player who is not passing at least 5 courses will be suspended from practice/game until those grades improve. In addition, we will have team goal of 2.8 GPA or better at the midterm report.

Communication I believe in open communication with the players and parents, please feel free to ask questions to me or the other members of the coaching staff , but I ask that you do so after practice or game. If your question is about a players position or playing time, I asked that the player speak to his position coach first.

Volunteers  I will need a few parents to help with some administrative tasks it take to run a high school team.

·         Team Mom or Team Dad, very important to handle overall team admin tasks.

·         Someone to film each game, this is important,  as we use this as a learning tool

·         Someone to do the Chains for home games

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
